  • A jiggle particle swarm optimization (JPSO) algorithm has been adopted for multi-parameter optimization of 2D electro-optical problems. Given the target track of electron trajectory and scope of optimization, it can find rotating axisymmetric vacuum boundaries and magnetic structures whose electron trajectories are close to the target one. The algorithm consists of two phases. In the first phase, up and down test method (jiggle) is adopted with continuous reference to the best particle’s information. In the second phase, the basic particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is adopted. The JPSO algorithm can find the global best solution with higher probability than the basic PSO algorithm, and shows multi-core computer’s potential in engineering design of electro-optical problems.   • Although Optical Camera Communications (OCC) has carved out a space in sixth-generation(6G) communications, building a theoretical analysis model for OCC remains an open question. Hence, we propose the analytical models for OCC systematic evaluation with unique quality of service (QoS) requirements, and build a practice communication system to validate the effectiveness of our models. A three-dimension discrete-time Markov chain is modeled to characterize the jiggle of user terminal in actual OCC scenarios. Supporting the randomly-oriented receiver, the available maximum data rate in guaranteeing statistical QoS based on effective capacity theory is derived. Moreover, a receiver imaging model is built to represent the logical relations of optical parameters, which provides guidance for image demodulation. Finally, extensive field experiments are implemented to verify the reasonability of our theoretical OCC models.

  • In recent years, the ground penetrating radar (GPR), which is characterized by its speediness, high efficiency, non-destruction, etc., has been widely used for detection in shallow subsurface. Numerical simulation is an effective measure for the research on GPR wave propagation in underground structure. The symplectic method is a kind of time-domain numerical scheme designed to conserve the total energy of the Hamiltonian system. This paper presented a numerical method for GPR simulation based on the 1st-order symplectic partitioned Runge-Kutta (SPRK) method. Comparison of the numerical results is made between SPRK method and FDTD method. It can be found that the proposed method can reach the same level of accuracy as FDTD scheme. But the CPU time is reduced by 25% of that by FDTD scheme. The wiggle map of two complicated GPR model is simulated by the proposed algorithm, which has a better understanding of the real GPR profiles.

  • ADI-FDTD could break through the restriction of the CFL stability condition and is unconditionally stable. However, UPML boundary condition has the characteristic of absorbing wide frequency and without the necessity for separating electric field from magnetic field. Its simple iterative formula is convenient for compiling program. Synthesizing the merits of both methods, this paper put forward a GPR numerical simulation algorithm of ADI-FDTD based upon UPML boundary condition. Through the discretization of the three two-dimensional Maxwell equations, this paper put forward two sub-time step iterative finite difference formulae of ADI-FDTD and UPML boundary condition of GPR wave, and gave the computing steps in detail separately. Based on this, we could compile the corresponding program, use the program to simulate the two GPR models, get the wiggle maps, scan maps, and snapshots of the two models. By analyzing these section maps and snapshots of the spreading process of GPR wave, we can learn the regularities of radar wave spreading and changing in the space, so as to guide interpretation of radar data reliably and accurately. The simulation result indicated that the ADI-FDTD algorithm based on the UPML boundary condition eliminated the strong reflection of truncating boundaries and it could choose larger time steps. So it could simulate GPR model efficiently, reliably and accurately.

  • Abstract. A mismatch between model- and proxy-based Holocene climate change, known as the “Holocene conundrum”, may partially originate from the poor spatial coverage of climate reconstructions in, for example, Asia, limiting the number of grid cells for model–data comparisons. Here we investigate hemispheric, latitudinal, and regional mean time series and time-slice anomaly maps of pollen-based reconstructions of mean annual temperature, mean July temperature, and annual precipitation from 1908 records in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics. Temperature trends show strong latitudinal patterns and differ between (sub-)continents. While the circum-Atlantic regions in Europe and eastern North America show a pronounced Middle Holocene temperature maximum, western North America shows only weak changes, and Asia mostly shows a continuous Holocene temperature increase. Likewise, precipitation trends show certain regional peculiarities such as the pronounced Middle Holocene precipitation maximum between 40 and 50∘ N in Asia and Holocene increasing trends in Europe and western North America, which can all be linked with Holocene changes in the regional circulation pattern responding to temperature change. Given a background of strong regional heterogeneity, we conclude that the calculation of global or hemispheric means, which initiated the Holocene conundrum debate, should focus more on understanding the spatiotemporal patterns and their regional drivers.
